7yr old rude to his mom in front of his friends
"Hello Annie
I have a seven year old son who has just recently started behaving really badly when he has his friends over. He's usually ok when he's by himself but as soon as his friends arrive he starts being rude to me, ignoring me, mouthing off etc. I don't want to embarrass him in front of his friends but this is really bothering me. How do I get it to stop?

This happens quite frequently as children get older. I can quite understand how it bothers you and that you don't want to embarrass your son in public. From reading your letter, I would suggest he's behaving like that because he thinks he can get away with it . He also probably thinks it looks cool to be able to ignore his mom. The best thing to do now is to adopt a two tiered approach to the problem. Warn him in advance that you will not accept bad behavior when his friends come over. If he is rude to you or ignores you, the consequence will be that he'll have to go to his room and his friends will be sent home immediately, because he will be unable to play with them. The second part of the plan is for you to wait for him to try again, which he surely will. Be totally prepared and be very firm. Stick to your guns and follow through. It will be embarrassing for him, but it'll also stop the behavior in it's tracks. Good luck.
