I can't get my daughter to read with me.

"

Hello Annie

I have a two year old little girl who doesn't like books. Every time I try and read with her she gets up and leaves. I'm worried that she's not going to have a good head start in reading. I'm not sure what I should do? Can you help?

Thanks

Victoria

Hi Victoria

Firstly, don't get too worried. As you know, two year olds are pretty active and sometimes they just don't want to sit still. As far as speculating as to why she's not enjoying sitting and reading with you, I'm wondering if she's disliking the reading process or the books themselves? Two year olds like to have as much control over their world as they can, so I'm wondering if what's turning her off is the fact that you have control over the process. If that's the case, then give her the book and point things out as she turns the pages. If she turns too fast or in the wrong direction, don't worry, she's still learning things and having an enjoyable experience. Don't get caught up too much in worrying about formal literacy at this age. Just being around books and enjoying them is all the preparation she needs. You also might want to try to introduce books in different form too, such as cloth books and ones for the bath. Best of luck.

Annie
