My daughter is two and loves TV.

Hi Annie the Nanny

My daughter is two and loves TV. I try not to let her watch too much, but she'll even stare at the screen when it's off, hoping it'll come on. She's hooked and if she has to wait too long she screams! Help!

Poor you! The issue of how much TV is appropriate is one that parents often struggle with right up to when their chidren leave home, so you're in good company. As I'm sure you know though, two year olds should not be watching too much television. However, I know it’s unrealistic to expect that mom or dad won’t plunk them in front of the box occasionally during the hectic periods and that’s ok. The question is, what can you do now that she seems so hooked? Well, fill up her day with other stuff. Take the focus off the TV. Go outside, swim, visit the playground. Get her involved in other activities and please make sure she has no TV in her bedroom! Make clear to her that the TV only comes at a specific point in her day and stick to it. If you don’t have a routine yet, my advice is to adopt one. Many parents find that once they have some order to their day and their children know what to expect, life becomes easier.
